Finding itself in the place of painting, photographs are blown up to the size of paintings, thereby distancing themselves from small-size photo-"graphics" making the print size a crucial aesthetic characteristic and thus consolidating the opposition of the new form to "art based on a photograph" and traditional "art photography".
One of the possible subdivisions in photography of recent years is partly expressed by the size of the print; the photographic-picture (with its inherent objectification and simultaneous assertion of its insufficiency as a documentary object - Jeff Wall, Andreas Gursky) and the Photographic-diary (with its emphasis on the author’s subjective view - Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans). In addition, modern photography is not satisfied with the current capabilities, it uses the old resources for technical and aesthetic forms.
Current art photography actively changes the format of representation and is difficult to classify.
