High Hopes Museum exhibition

17 cultural heroes of Nizhny Novgorod,
who left their mark in history of contemporary art

High Hopes Museum exhibition marks the opening of the Arsenal building of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin after restoration works; it demonstrates thematic and value orientations of the NCCA Volga-Vyatka region branch.
Large-scale exposition, accommodated by two floors of new exhibition spaces, is dedicated to the great people of the Nizhny Novgorod region which can be conventionally regarded as actual artists of their time: self-taught mechanic Ivan Kulibin, the first female doctor Nadezhda Suslova, composers Mily Balakirev and Mikhail Matyushin, photographers Andrey Karelin and Maxim Dmitriev, pilots Petr Nesterov and Valery Chkalov, writer Maxim Gorky, engineers Rostislav Alexeyev and Vladimir Shukhov… The project also includes authors, directly associated with artistic work: photographers Andrey Karelin and Maxim Dmitriev, composers Mily Balakirev and Mikhail Matyushin, writer Maxim Gorky.

Each hero of the past is matched with like-minded contemporary artists, through years and distances engaged into co-authorship with their characters, they brought out images and achievements of the heroes of the past through art. The only exception is the legendary engineer Rostislav Alexeyev who is a subject and an object of artistic research. Work of Alexeyev is a mixture of technical and artistic work. His legacy includes not only blueprints for specialists, but also drawings, photos, paintings.

Working with the heroes of the past, examining their life and creative career, trying to understand inner workings of their masterpieces, contemporary artists search answers to certain questions: how to make cultural heritage a part of actual experience and how to involve it into creation of an image of possible future?

The exposition is arranged in chronological and thematic order. Travel through the exhibition is a trip from the XVIII to the XXI century through photography and literature, music and medicine, engineering and airmanship art. One of the halls hosts an “exhibition inside exhibition” – Radio Review project of a curator and artist Evgeniy Strelkov, dedicated to heroes of the Nizhny Novgorod radio physics school: Alexander Popov, Vsevolod Troitsky, Mikhail Bonch-Brunevich and many others.

Majority of the works presented at the exhibition were created by artists specifically for this project. It is the result of inspiration by life and work of the great people of Nizhny Novgorod, it is also the result of in-depth research – expeditions to museums, memorial places related to biographies of our heroes, and even to their burial places.
The exposition is accompanied by a special authorial guide to the city and the region, offering information about museums, streets and places of interests related to the main characters of the exhibition.
