Alex Brodovich, legendary art director of "Harper's Bazaar", was famous for the phrase with which he often addressed his authors: "Surprise me!". It is this ability to grasp the new, the previously un-captured that was characteristic of fashion photographers of the twentieth century. Fashion photography during the 100 years of its existence has developed and changed, becoming a powerful artistic phenomenon in its own right. It has reflected the diversity of the richest and brightest events of the last century: from artistic trends to social protests. Fashion photography, like fashion in the twentieth century, evolved and changed at a dizzying pace, illustrating and reflecting life. The new challenges and trends of fashion photography of the 21st century that reflect the present will be discussed in the lecture. Ludmila Mashanskaya is a specialist in the history of photography, a fashion historian and art critic.
